Introduction

Born and raised in Mexico City, I've been happily married since 2017 and have been immersed in the world of Product Design ever since. My journey began in hardware, where I crafted solutions tailored to the pharmaceutical industry, driven by a profound passion for meeting users' needs. The process of creating something that directly addressed real-world challenges ignited a spark within me.

I thrived on engaging with large pharmaceutical companies, delving into their operations, and meticulously understanding every aspect of their production environments. From noting down requirements to measuring dimensions down to the millimeter (yes, I'm that meticulous), I ensured my designs seamlessly integrated into their workflows. Imagine crafting a massive stainless steel table and ensuring it smoothly navigates through every door and corridor without a hitch!

My career started with the fundamentals instilled during my college years: research, design, and implementation. Yet, the reality is far from straightforward. Anticipating potential pitfalls and planning meticulously are integral parts of my role. I must foresee challenges, navigate complex situations, and ensure our solutions align with business objectives, all while mastering the art of financial management and pricing strategies. It's a dynamic and intense journey, but one I embrace wholeheartedly.

I encountered numerous challenges throughout my journey, spanning technical hurdles and interpersonal dynamics. Balancing user requirements with budgetary and resource constraints required meticulous planning back at the office. Our manufacturing partners weren't in close proximity, necessitating frequent travel. This meant that every trip had to be well-prepared to avoid compromising the entire project—an exhilarating yet demanding experience.

Transitioning to a startup environment injected a new level of excitement into my career. We embarked on creating Mexico's first network of "Smart Lockers," revolutionizing parcel pickups for online shoppers. Imagine receiving a notification, using a token to access your locker, and finding your package securely waiting for you—it was innovation at its finest. As one of the early team members, we worked tirelessly, collaborating closely with software developers, firmware engineers, marketers, and leadership to bring our MVP to life. Witnessing our locker's door open for the first time was a milestone we celebrated with tears of joy.

As our startup scaled, my role evolved to include closing deals with retail partners and delving deeper into software development. I became the go-to Product expert, addressing questions about our locker's compatibility with diverse customer environments and exploring new features. Learning to say "no" strategically became crucial for navigating product development and ensuring our company's success. However, the onset of Covid-19 dealt us a significant blow. Despite initial hopes of increased demand due to lockdowns, the reality was starkly different.

Our once-promising venture faced declining sales and departing team members seeking new opportunities. Market trends, particularly Amazon's dominance with its lockers, highlighted the limited demand for smart lockers in Mexico. We realized that our product, while innovative, was prohibitively expensive for the market. To address this, I spearheaded the development of a more cost-effective hardware version, optimized firmware, and slashed our locker's price by 60%. Despite these efforts, market demand remained elusive.

Product Owner background
Technical Product Owner in an international company

A recruiter approached me with an opportunity I had always yearned for: to work in a multicultural environment that would push me beyond my comfort zone. The role involved daily communication in English and collaborating with teams from diverse global backgrounds—an offer I couldn't refuse. Thus began my journey as a Technical Product Owner, bridging the gap between upper management and engineering teams. I introduced proposals that streamlined processes for both engineers and managers, becoming instrumental in roadmap decisions based on our allocated user story points.

Managing five Scrum teams simultaneously, each handling distinct projects and clients, posed its challenges, particularly in managing our growing technical debt. To address this, I proposed and implemented a dedicated team to handle technical debt, allowing others to focus on feature development. This strategy significantly improved our product's quality and appeal to customers. I actively collaborated with Product Managers on feature prioritization, addressed technical impediments with developers, and ensured seamless communication across global teams in different time zones.

Unfortunately, I'm currently facing a massive layoff due to the company's decision to shut down its Mexican entity, along with many other talented Mexican engineers. Despite this setback, I see it as an opportunity to bring my wealth of experience and expertise to a new team. I believe my skills and dedication make me an asset, and I'm eager to contribute to your team's success. What do you say?
